    Hmmm, I wondered if it had something to do with that thing!

  2. You appear to be viewing a magnetic compass through a small aperture. I’m sure you have a good reason for doing this, but I don’t know what it is. Perhaps through the small hole, the position of the compass needle is more accurately discerned.

    • Very good, Rebecca; that’s what I was doing! Because of a lens in that small hole, the viewer can see the compass reading by adjusting the angle of the “stick” upon which the lens sits. That allows the spotter to sight in on the object and then read the compass bearing without loosing his place. I guess. 🙂
