How Does God Choose When the Options Are Vile and Evil?

Analyzing the dilemma of the 2016 US Presidential election

We think we know that Hillary Clinton or Donald Trump will be the next President of the United States. We’re sure it won’t be Bernie Sanders or Ted Cruz. And we’re certain it won’t be Jill Stein or Gary Johnson (did I get their names right even?).

Maybe it won’t be any of those.

God does with the king's heart as He wills.

I suppose most Christians know that the powers that be are set up by God (Romans 13:1). Because of that, some of us Christians believe we should leave it up to God to raise to power and remove from power. Others believe God wants us to participate in the process by casting our votes. However, I suspect all Christians believe the Sovereign One has the final say.

So…whom has God chosen to be the next US President? We won’t know before January 20, 2017. Perhaps it is Trump or Hillary. But maybe Barack Obama will continue as the 44th President. Or maybe it is the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Or Vladimir Putin.

There. Having reminded you of some unexpected possibilities, I go back to Donald and Hillary. It’s easy for me to think of the one as vile and the other as evil. For you, it might be the other way around. Perhaps the most objective observers would say they each are both evil and vile. And the most partisan might say the one is both and the other is neither.

What other word uses the same letters as vile and evil? That’s right. Live.

Both Mrs. Clinton and Mr. Trump have said they are Christians. Neither should be vile or evil, but should live the life of Christ. Instead, they both tarnish the Name they claim.

I pity the Christian voter who believes he must vote for one of those two. Or that he must vote to stop one of those two. Or that he must vote to protest both of those two.

I pity such a voter for more than one reason, but I’ll mention only one here: He has no way of knowing whom God has chosen to be the 45th President of the United States! It’s very possible a majority of Christian voters will vote against God’s chosen one. Christian voters opposing God’s choice: What a pity!

The sincere Christian voter may want to pick the best option for President, but God may have other plans.

The sincere Christian voter may conclude that he is stuck with voting for the lesser of two evils (or viles, if you prefer), but God may have chosen the greater of two evils.

Would God truly choose the greater of two evils?! Well, you tell me…

“…the Most High is sovereign over all kingdoms on earth and gives them to anyone he wishes” (Daniel 4:17 NIV).

“…the Most High is ruler over the realm of mankind, And bestows it on whom He wishes” (Daniel 4:17 NASB).

“…the most High ruleth in the kingdom of men, and giveth it to whomsoever he will” (Daniel 4:17 KJV).

I don’t know whom God has chosen, Mr. Trump or Mrs. Clinton (or whether He has chosen someone else). I do know I don’t want to oppose God in His doings.

I pray that God will restrain all that’s evil and vile. Even so, I understand that the time is coming during which all evil in its most vile expressions will be unleashed. For all that I know, that begins at noon on January 20, 2017.

May God’s people live the life of Jesus. That includes me. I hope it includes you. May it also come to include DJT and HRC.

Why are you so fearful?
