Our Sunday School lesson for July 10, 2011, uses Amos 8 for the source text.

Here are some striking verses:

Behold, the days come, saith the Lord God,
that I will send a famine in the land,
not a famine of bread,
nor a thirst for water,
but of hearing the words of the Lord:

And they shall wander from sea to sea,
and from the north even to the east,
they shall run to and fro to seek the word of the Lord,
and shall not find it.

In that day
shall the fair virgins and young men
faint for thirst.

Amos 8:11-13

Why was this famine and this thirst upon God’s people then?

Do I live in such peril?

What is the disposition of my heart toward God’s Word?

Do I chafe at some of its provisions?

Do I look for loopholes in it or detours around it?

Reading:

Amos 7:7-17

Can I see what God wants me to see?

What is God’s plumbline in my life?

Must God lay waste and leave desolate any of my special places?

What will I do should my word become unwelcome among my people?

Do I belong to a prophet-welcoming church?

Am I open and submissive to God’s calling?
