{"id":1624,"date":"2009-07-08T11:27:39","date_gmt":"2009-07-08T18:27:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/eaf.net\/mvp\/?p=1624"},"modified":"2009-07-08T11:27:39","modified_gmt":"2009-07-08T18:27:39","slug":"my-car-my-castle","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.eaf.net\/mvp\/2009\/my-car-my-castle\/","title":{"rendered":"My Car, My Castle?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I suppose back in the good old days, if I could buy a Model T, I could drive it.<\/p>\n<p>Then the liberties began to be chipped away.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Licenses<\/strong> &#8212; We must have them in order to legally drive a motor vehicle.\n<li><strong>Registration<\/strong> &#8212; Our motor vehicles must be registered with (and license plated by) the state.\n<li><strong>Speed Limits<\/strong> &#8212; Do bicyclists and joggers have speed limits?\n<li><strong>Fueling Up<\/strong> &#8212; In Oregon we&#8217;re not free to pump gasoline into our own vehicles.\n<li><strong>Insurance<\/strong> &#8212; first, optional; then, liability mandatory.\n<li><strong>Seat Belts<\/strong> &#8212; first, optional use; then, mandatory use\n<li><strong>DEQ Tests<\/strong> &#8212; first, in metro areas; then, further and further out into the country\n<li><strong>Fueling up II<\/strong> &#8212; As of July 1, topping off you fuel tank is illegal as well.\n<li><strong>Cellphone Use<\/strong> &#8212; after the first of next year, I won&#8217;t be able to drive and talk on a hand-held device in Oregon. (That&#8217;s already the case in Washington and elsewhere.) I guess that will make it easier to shave, hold a cup of coffee, and drive.<\/ul>\n<p>I could give more examples, but I&#8217;ll ask some questions instead:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>When will we have to start wearing helmets?\n<li>When will our passengers have to be quiet?\n<li>When will single-person (ie, driver-only) vehicles be mandated?\n<li>When will we not be allowed to listen to radios and other acoustic devices?<\/ol>\n<p>Oh well.
