(But who done it?)<\/p>\n<p><strong>1611<\/strong> &#8211; Mutineers set Henry Hudson adrift in Hudson Bay; he was never seen again. (Well, his son and some others saw him a while longer &#8212; they were set adrift with him.)<\/p>\n<p><strong>1633<\/strong> \u2013 The Holy Office in Rome forces Galileo Galilei to recant his view that the Sun, not the Earth, is the center of the Universe. (Eventually, the truth &#8220;dawned&#8221; on them.)<\/p>\n<p><strong>1772<\/strong> &#8211; Slavery was outlawed in England. (Three cheers for the English!)<\/p>\n<p><strong>1815<\/strong> &#8211; Napoleon Bonaparte abdicates a second time. (He eventually got the hang of it.)<\/p>\n<p><strong>1825<\/strong> \u2013 The British Parliament abolishes feudalism and the seigneurial system in British North America. (Three cheers for the British!)<\/p>\n<p><strong>1832<\/strong> &#8211; John Howe patents pin manufacturing machine.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1868<\/strong> &#8211; Arkansas was re-admitted to the Union.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1870<\/strong> \u2013 US Congress creates the Department of Justice. (You know, the outfit that Eric Holder presently operates.)<\/p>\n<p><strong>1873<\/strong> &#8211; Prince Edward Island joins Canada. (So it ceased to be an island?)<\/p>\n<p><strong>1874<\/strong> &#8211; Game of lawn tennis was introduced. (By?)<\/p>\n<p><strong>1939<\/strong> &#8211; Future Queen Elizabeth of England meets future husband Philip. (See 1982 below.)<\/p>\n<p><strong>1942<\/strong> &#8211; A Japanese submarine shells Fort Stevens at the mouth of the Columbia River. (That&#8217;s in Oregon. And I was there, though not for the shelling.)<\/p>\n<p><strong>1970<\/strong> &#8211; President Nixon signs the 26th Amendment, lowering the voting age to 18. (Just what do eighteen-year-olds know about that kind of stuff?!)<\/p>\n<p><strong>1976<\/strong> \u2013 The Canadian House of Commons abolishes capital punishment.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1980<\/strong> &#8211; The Soviet Union announces a partial withdrawal of its forces from Afghanistan.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1982<\/strong> &#8211; Prince Charles and Lady Diana take Prince William home from hospital. (Had he been sick?)<\/p>\n<p><strong>1990<\/strong> \u2013 Checkpoint Charlie is dismantled in Berlin. (And Florida prohibits a certain type of bathing suit.)<\/p>\n<p><strong>1992<\/strong> &#8211; The US Supreme Court unanimously rules that hate-crime laws that ban cross-burning and similar expressions of racial bias violated free-speech rights. (Defining free speech seems to be getting ridiculouser.)<\/p>\n<p><strong>2009<\/strong> \u2013 Eastman Kodak Company announces that it will discontinue sales of the Kodachrome Color Film. (I wonder how many years it&#8217;s been since I last took a film photo.)<\/p>\n<p>Disclaimer: I can&#8217;t personally attest to the truth of much of any of this.
