1942<\/strong> – A Japanese submarine shells Fort Stevens at the mouth of the Columbia River. (That’s in Oregon. And I was there, though not for the shelling.)<\/p>\n

1976<\/strong> \u2013 The Canadian House of Commons abolishes capital punishment.<\/p>\n

1980<\/strong> – The Soviet Union announces a partial withdrawal of its forces from Afghanistan.<\/p>\n

1982<\/strong> – Prince Charles and Lady Diana take Prince William home from hospital. (Had he been sick?)<\/p>\n

1990<\/strong> \u2013 Checkpoint Charlie is dismantled in Berlin. (And Florida prohibits a certain type of bathing suit.)<\/p>\n

1992<\/strong> – The US Supreme Court unanimously rules that hate-crime laws that ban cross-burning and similar expressions of racial bias violated free-speech rights. (Defining free speech seems to be getting ridiculouser.)<\/p>\n

2009<\/strong> \u2013 Eastman Kodak Company announces that it will discontinue sales of the Kodachrome Color Film. (I wonder how many years it’s been since I last took a film photo.)<\/p>\n
