{"id":2465,"date":"2012-07-04T17:29:59","date_gmt":"2012-07-05T00:29:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.eaf.net\/mvp\/?p=2465"},"modified":"2012-07-04T17:31:00","modified_gmt":"2012-07-05T00:31:00","slug":"rule-just-watch-them-die","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.eaf.net\/mvp\/2012\/rule-just-watch-them-die\/","title":{"rendered":"Rule: Just Watch Them Die"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Well, I guess if you worked for Jeff Ellis and Associates, you could opt not to watch.<\/p>\n<p>Or forfeit your job by rescuing the person.<\/p>\n<p>Or jump in the water and pretend you have someone closer that needs rescuing.<\/p>\n<p>Tom\u00e1s Lopes took the second option above. <!--more--> And six coworkers said they would do the same thing.<\/p>\n<p>So Jeff Ellis and Associates considered its rules and its &#8220;liability issues&#8221; and&#8230;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Six Florida lifeguards have lost their jobs for backing a coworker&#8217;s decision to save a man struggling in the surf but outside their jurisdiction.<\/p>\n<p>Tomas Lopez , 21, was fired Monday for vacating his lifeguarding zone to save a man drowning in unprotected waters 1,500 feet south of his post on Hallandale Beach, Fla.<\/p>\n<p class=\"alignrightsmall\"><a href='http:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/US\/fired-florida-lifeguards-coworkers-exit\/story?id=16711655'>Fired Florida Lifeguard&#8217;s Coworkers Exit<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Hey, ABC, whatfer headline is that, anyway? To say they exited makes it sound like they quit. The story says they were fired.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m also puzzled about something else, ABC &#8212; why did Tom\u00e1s Lopez double underhook the man on the beach?<\/p>\n<p>Well, ABC&#8217;s strange stuff aside, I hope Jeff Ellis and Associates reverses course. But that seems a silly hope, given that they followed up on firing the rescuer by firing his supportive coworkers a couple of days later.<\/p>\n<p>Too bad.<\/p>\n<p><b>Many cheers for Mr. Lopes and his pro-life co-workers!<\/b><\/p>\n<p>They put duty to their fellowman above duty to their employer.<\/p>\n<p>I naturally wonder if they are &#8220;merely&#8221; <i>decent<\/i> human beings or if they also are followers of the One who said, <span class=\"verse\">&#8220;Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends&#8221;<\/span> (John 15:13).<\/p>\n<p>Well, if I ever need help, I hope those within range to help are of that mentality (as opposed to the mentality exhibited and reaffirmed by the decision-making executives of&#8230;well, I don&#8217;t need to name that company yet again).<\/p>\n<p>Note to that company: Do you know for whom <a href=\"http:\/\/www.eaf.net\/mvp\/2009\/jason-oglesbee-hero\/\" title=\"Heroes at work\">Jason Oglesbee and Joe Lowe<\/a> worked?
