{"id":3338,"date":"2015-11-09T16:34:38","date_gmt":"2015-11-10T00:34:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.eaf.net\/mvp\/?p=3338"},"modified":"2015-11-09T16:41:30","modified_gmt":"2015-11-10T00:41:30","slug":"i-must-decrease","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.eaf.net\/mvp\/2015\/i-must-decrease\/","title":{"rendered":"I Must Decrease"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;I&#8217;ve been there and done that,&#8221; I think to myself. &#8220;I&#8217;ve done what he&#8217;s doing and been what he is.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div style=\"border-top:3px solid darkgreen; border-bottom:3px solid darkgreen; margin-left:3em; font-family:georgia, times new roman; font-size:150%; width:35%; float:right; padding:15px; margin-top:.5em\">&#8220;I&#8217;ve been there and done that,&#8221; I think to myself.<\/div>\n<p>But times change and needs change. As does standing. As do positions, assignments, and responsibilities. And when the time comes for me to give up long-held things like that, I want to remember again what John the Baptist said: <span class=\"verse\">&#8220;He must increase, but I must decrease&#8221;<\/span> (John 3:30).<\/p>\n<p>I remembered it when I resigned as principal of &#8220;my&#8221; school.<\/p>\n<p>I remembered it when I encouraged another friend to assume a calling that would diminish &#8220;my&#8221; role.<\/p>\n<p>I hope I remember it when I&#8217;m replaced as chairman of the board I&#8217;ve &#8220;headed&#8221; for over 19 years. <!--more--><\/p>\n<div class=\"capt-pix\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.eaf.net\/pantinghart\/2010\/giving-of-myself-to-others\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/pantinghart\/wp-content\/he-humbled-himself.jpg\" alt=\"The Scriptures say in Philippians 2:8 -- He humbled himself, and became obedient\" title=\"God's Word says: He humbled himself, and became obedient (Philippians 2:8)\"\/><\/a><br \/>\n<em>&#8220;He humbled himself&#8221;<\/em> (Philippians 2:8)<\/div>\n<div class=\"quotes\">&#8220;He must increase, but I must decrease.&#8221;<\/div>\n<p>I purpose to maintain that perspective. But I want it to be more than a mere statement of realism &#8212; &#8220;it&#8217;s just the way life goes,&#8221; you know.<\/p>\n<p>And I want it to be much more than acceptance of the inevitable.<\/p>\n<p>I want it to be the submissive recognition of the wise will of my sovereign God, the One who knows all things and does all things well.<\/p>\n<p>I want it to be the humble commitment to the success of another.<\/p>\n<div class=\"quotes\">&#8220;He must increase, but I must decrease.&#8221;<\/div>\n<p>As I ponder this matter, I realize a range of things can make this increase-decrease business difficult.<\/p>\n<ul style=\"margin-top:-1.2em\">\n<li>when others wish (to the decreaser) that it weren&#8217;t so<\/li>\n<li>when others clearly and openly are glad it is so<\/li>\n<li>when the increaser<\/li>\n<ul>\n<li>goes proud and all lordy<\/li>\n<li>forgets, ignores, or holds in low regard the decreaser<\/li>\n<li>flaunts his increase and rubs it in the decreaser&#8217;s face<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<li style=\"margin-top:-1.2em\">losing sight of God&#8217;s love, sovereignty, foreknowledge, and wisdom<\/li>\n<li>indulging pride and self-pity<\/li>\n<li>feeling injustice<\/li>\n<li>wrestling with nostalgia<\/li>\n<li>imagining entitlement (how odd, since someone else most likely had to decrease so I could increase!)<\/li>\n<li>having a shepherd&#8217;s heart or even just all the personal investment at every level<\/li>\n<li>claiming ownership &#8212; overlooking that it&#8217;s not &#8220;my&#8221; school or &#8220;my&#8221; church or &#8220;my&#8221; board; it&#8217;s God&#8217;s<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>May I remember such things when I&#8217;m the increaser!<\/p>\n<p>When I decrease so another increases (or even when I decrease <em>because<\/em> another increases), I want to do so in a God-inclined way: <span class=\"verse\">&#8220;not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver&#8221;<\/span> (2 Corinthians 9:7).<\/p>\n<p>I want to be a ready decreaser because I&#8217;m interested in and focused on <span class=\"verse\">&#8220;first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness&#8221;<\/span> (Matthew 6:33). I want to be driven by the best interests of His kingdom, even when it means crucifying my own best interests.<\/p>\n<p>I want to yield my role and help increase another in that role like my Dad did with his bishoprick: graciously and gracefully, meekly and humbly, unselfishly and supportively; without whining, moaning, complaining. I praise God for such a real-life model of<\/p>\n<div class=\"quotes\">&#8220;He must increase, but I must decrease.&#8221;<\/div>\n<p>So be it. Even though it&#8217;s hard.<\/p>\n<p>I can do this only by having the mind of Christ with its part-and-parcel meekness, humility, love, and servant heart.<\/p>\n<p>PS: Here&#8217;s my translation of my theme sentence from the Spanish Bible (Reina-Valera 1960):<\/p>\n<div class=\"facebook\">It is necessary that he increase, but that I wane.<\/div>\n<p>Disclaimer: This post has been in the cranial hopper for months.
