{"id":3721,"date":"2018-01-24T07:08:26","date_gmt":"2018-01-24T15:08:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.eaf.net\/mvp\/?p=3721"},"modified":"2018-01-24T07:20:19","modified_gmt":"2018-01-24T15:20:19","slug":"oregonians-bite-the-hand-that-heals-them","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.eaf.net\/mvp\/2018\/oregonians-bite-the-hand-that-heals-them\/","title":{"rendered":"Oregonians Bite the Hand That Heals Them"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I see this morning that yesterday&#8217;s health tax ballot here in Oregon passed handily.<\/p>\n<p>I don&#8217;t know if the <em>yea<\/em> voters did so in a fit of largesse at the public trough. Or if they poked the <em>Yes<\/em> key (is there such a thing?) out of consistency with their well-practiced <strong>personal pocketbook expressions of compassion<\/strong> for the needy.<\/p>\n<p>Whatever the motivator, they approved a pile of new tax dollars for hospitals: <!--more--><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Oregon&#8217;s Medicaid program survived intact Tuesday, after voters approved hundreds of millions of dollars in health care taxes in a special election.<\/p>\n<p>Measure 101, which led 61 percent to 39 percent with returns partially tallied, was the only issue on the ballot. It will raise $210 million to $320 million in taxes on Oregon&#8217;s largest hospitals and many health insurance policies by 2019.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Correction: Oregonians approved a pile of next tax dollars <em>from<\/em> hospitals. And many health insurance policies.<\/p>\n<p>I must not understand the Way Things Are. To me it seems they approved increasing the cost of going to the hospital and of buying health insurance. To me <em>that<\/em> seems like approving new taxes on yourself.
