So Wednesday morning I decided to read over the Scripture text for next Sunday&#8217;s lesson. Here you have a selection of hasty, preliminary notes I jotted down for myself on the first ten verses. I&#8217;m sure I&#8217;ll develop some further for possible use in my class. In fact, I already added a line or two here and there.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.eaf.net\/pantinghart\/2008\/in-all-my-ways\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/pantinghart\/wp-content\/mercyandtruth-s.jpg\" alt=\"Let not mercy and truth forsake thee (Proverbs 3:3)\" class=\"aligncenter\" style=\"width:400px; height:300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:center; font-size:80%; margin-top:-1.2em\"><em>from Proverbs 3:3<\/em> <!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Oh, one other thing. The Spanish stuff comes from the Reina-Valera 1960 version of the Bible. Beneath each such usage you will find my translation to English.<\/p>\n<p><em class=\"verse\">&#8220;My son, forget not my law; but let thine heart keep my commandments&#8221;<\/em> (Proverbs 3:1).<\/p>\n<ul style=\"margin-top:-1.2em\">\n<li>forget or keep &#8212; my choice<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em class=\"verse\">&#8220;For length of days, and long life, and peace, shall they add to thee&#8221;<\/em> (Proverbs 3:2).<\/p>\n<ul style=\"margin-top:-1.2em\">\n<li>We tend to ask how-can-it-be or what-does-it-mean questions about the lifespan stuff, but not about the peace.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em class=\"verse\">&#8220;Let not mercy and truth forsake thee: bind them about thy neck; write them upon the table of thine heart&#8221;<\/em> (Proverbs 3:3).<\/p>\n<ul style=\"margin-top:-1.2em\">\n<li>Mercy and truth go together, so keep them together &#8212; around your neck and within your heart.<\/li>\n<ul>\n<li>Don&#8217;t ever let them get away from you.<\/li>\n<li>Mercy and truth stabilize and guide the heart.<\/li>\n<li>They also beautify the character.<\/li>\n<li>When you fasten something around your neck, it may be as a necklace or as a collar.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em class=\"verse\">&#8220;So shalt thou find favour and good understanding in the sight of God and man&#8221;<\/em> (Proverbs 3:4).<\/p>\n<ul style=\"margin-top:-1.2em\">\n<li>This is how you please God.<\/li>\n<li>Not <em>all<\/em> men, of course.<\/li>\n<li><em>favour<\/em> = H2580 = &#8220;graciousness&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em class=\"verse\">&#8220;Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding&#8221;<\/em> (Proverbs 3:5).<\/p>\n<ul style=\"margin-top:-1.2em\">\n<li>The heart &#8212; where obedience (v1), mercy and truth (v3), and trust (v5) belong.<\/li>\n<li>Trust God fully.<\/li>\n<li>Lean on His perspective and understanding, not your own.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em class=\"verse\">&#8220;In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths&#8221;<\/em> (Proverbs 3:6).<\/p>\n<ul style=\"margin-top:-1.2em\">\n<li>&#8220;Recon\u00f3celo en todos tus caminos, Y \u00e9l enderezar\u00e1 tus veredas.&#8221;<\/li>\n<ul>\n<li>&#8220;Recognize Him and give Him recognition in all your ways, and He will straighten out your paths.&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<li>Wherever you are and whatever you are doing, recognize Him.<\/li>\n<li>Then He can guide you.<\/li>\n<li>Is there a difference between directing my path and directing me?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em class=\"verse\">&#8220;Be not wise in thine own eyes: fear the LORD, and depart from evil&#8221;<\/em> (Proverbs 3:7).<\/p>\n<ul style=\"margin-top:-1.2em\">\n<li>Not your own understanding; not your own wisdom.<\/li>\n<li>Don&#8217;t have an exalted view of yourself and your wisdom.<\/li>\n<ul>\n<li>Keep your view of God right.<\/li>\n<li>Keep your relationship with God right.<\/li>\n<li>Choose to avoid evil and abandon evil.<\/li>\n<ul>\n<li>Remember: friendship with the world is enmity with God (James 4:4).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/ul>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em class=\"verse\">&#8220;It shall be health to thy navel, and marrow to thy bones&#8221;<\/em> (Proverbs 3:8).<\/p>\n<ul style=\"margin-top:-1.2em\">\n<li>This sounds like verse 2.<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;Porque ser\u00e1 medicina a tu cuerpo, Y refrigerio para tus huesos.&#8221;<\/li>\n<ul>\n<li>&#8220;Because it shall be medicine to your body, and refreshment for your bones.&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em class=\"verse\">&#8220;Honour the LORD with thy substance, and with the firstfruits of all thine increase&#8221;<\/em> (Proverbs 3:9).<\/p>\n<ul style=\"margin-top:-1.2em\">\n<li>&#8220;Honra a Jehov\u00e1 con tus bienes, Y con las primicias de todos tus frutos&#8221;<\/li>\n<ul>\n<li>&#8220;Honor Jehovah with your goods, and with the first fruits of all your fruits.&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<li>Somehow, honor God with that which is essential in your life and for your life &#8212; the substance.<\/li>\n<ul>\n<li>Also with the first and best and most needful of your gains.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<li><em>substance<\/em> = H1952 = &#8220;wealth&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em class=\"verse\">&#8220;So shall thy barns be filled with plenty, and thy presses shall burst out with new wine&#8221;<\/em> (Proverbs 3:10).<\/p>\n<ul style=\"margin-top:-1.2em\">\n<li>Where is my abundance and plenty? In fact, where are my barns even?<\/li>\n<ul>\n<li>Do my questions reveal a failure on my part to meet the apparent conditions stated in verse 9?<\/li>\n<li>Or can we chalk off this verse as just another example in this passage of God &#8220;overstating&#8221; His promises?
