{"id":2169,"date":"2018-01-04T07:54:22","date_gmt":"2018-01-04T15:54:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.eaf.net\/pantinghart\/?p=2169"},"modified":"2018-01-24T20:07:51","modified_gmt":"2018-01-25T04:07:51","slug":"do-these-things-to-be-stable-steadfast-and-triumphant","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.eaf.net\/pantinghart\/2018\/do-these-things-to-be-stable-steadfast-and-triumphant\/","title":{"rendered":"Do These Things to Be Stable, Steadfast, and Triumphant"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"lectura\" style=\"width:225px\">Reading:<\/p>\n<h3>2 Peter 1:8-11<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<p>I made some observations about verses 8 and 9 yesterday, but I wanted some of verse 10&#8217;s <em>wherefore<\/em> context here.<\/p>\n<div class=\"passage\">\n<ol start=\"8\">\n<li>For if these things be in you, and abound, they make you that ye shall neither be barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.<\/li>\n<li>But he that lacketh these things is blind, and cannot see afar off, and hath forgotten that he was purged from his old sins.<\/li>\n<li>Wherefore the rather, brethren, give diligence to make your calling and election sure: for if ye do these things, ye shall never fall:<\/li>\n<li>For so an entrance shall be ministered unto you abundantly into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/div>\n<p>Peter repeats several already-familiar themes in verses 10 and 11: diligence, these things, furnishing, and abundance. (If you haven&#8217;t read my previous three entries, you might want to start with the first one: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.eaf.net\/pantinghart\/2018\/effects-of-knowing-jesus\/\">Effects of Knowing Jesus<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p>To avoid the idle worthlessness and blind forgetfulness that come from not abounding in &#8220;these things&#8221; (2 Peter 1:8,9), I must prioritize securing my vocation and election. I must also remember, though, that both of them are the work and gift of Jesus, who dwells in me.<\/p>\n<div style=\"margin-top:1.5em; margin-left:auto; margin-right:auto; border:1px dotted red; padding:10px; width:150px; text-align:center; font-family:arial,'sans serif'; font-size:.8em; line-height:1.5\"><strong>These Things<\/strong><br \/>\n<em style=\"font-size:90%\">2 Peter 1:5-7<\/em><\/p>\n<p>virtue<br \/>\nknowledge<br \/>\nself dominion<br \/>\nendurance<br \/>\npiety<br \/>\nbrotherly affection<br \/>\ncharity<\/p><\/div>\n<p>If I do &#8220;these things,&#8221; I will never fall! Vigorous stability and victorious strength come from faithfulness in &#8220;these things.&#8221; So let me treasure them, pursue them, and nurture them. Thus would Christ <!--more-->live His life in me (Galatians 2:20).<\/p>\n<p>Instead of barely making it into Christ&#8217;s kingdom in minimalist mode, He will furnish&#8230;there&#8217;s that word again, masquerading in the KJV as <em>ministered<\/em>&#8230;He will furnish me with ample and generous entrance. <em>Abundantly<\/em> here reminds me of the grace and peace multiplied in verse 2.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.eaf.net\/pantinghart\/wp-content\/uploads\/stablished-in-the-faith.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.eaf.net\/pantinghart\/wp-content\/uploads\/stablished-in-the-faith.jpg\" alt=\"Stablished in the faith, as ye have been taught (Colossians 2:7)\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2172\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.eaf.net\/pantinghart\/wp-content\/uploads\/stablished-in-the-faith.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.eaf.net\/pantinghart\/wp-content\/uploads\/stablished-in-the-faith-150x113.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.eaf.net\/pantinghart\/wp-content\/uploads\/stablished-in-the-faith-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.eaf.net\/pantinghart\/wp-content\/uploads\/stablished-in-the-faith-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.eaf.net\/pantinghart\/wp-content\/uploads\/stablished-in-the-faith-668x501.jpg 668w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<div id=\"spoudazo\" style=\"width:150px; margin-left:auto; margin-right:auto; border:1px dotted red; padding:10px; text-align:center\">\n<em>give diligence<\/em><br \/>\n<em>spoudazo<\/em><br \/>\nG4704<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;to use speed, ie to make effort, be prompt or earnest&#8221;<\/p><\/div>\n<p>One more thing&#8230; <em>Give diligence<\/em> in verse 10 is the verb form of the Greek word translated <em>diligence<\/em> in verse 5. Notice the meaning of <em>spoudazo<\/em> in the box. Peter will use the term two more times in this book.
