“That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit” (John 3:6).

Anybody that sees me can tell that I was born of the flesh. I have a body. Obviously I was born.

Can anybody that sees me also tell that I was born of the Spirit?

They can’t, unless . . . .

My face reveals it.

My words and actions reveal it.

My attitudes and demeanor reveal it.

For a long time I have tried to live in a way that does not bring shame and regret to my father and mother after the flesh.

I purpose to continue trying to live in a way that does not bring shame and regret to my Father after the Spirit.

Jesus said one thing; the Jews understood another.

“But he spake of the temple of his body” (John 2:21).

How could their misunderstanding have been prevented? By knowing Him better.

It strikes me this morning that the better I know Jesus, the better I will understand what He says.

I know His thoughts are far above my own. That, and my finite human mind, limit what I can understand of Jesus.

However, I am encouraged and blessed with the realization that the written Word He has given is “scaled down” that we might understand it.

No, it’s not an inferior Word. It’s a holy, eternal Word given for the benefit of mere mortals.

The key to understanding it better is knowing better the One who gave it.
