May I be a friend of Jesus Christ without doing what He says?

In my morning reading from a collage of Scriptures, I read this:

Ye are my friends,
if ye do whatsoever I command you.
John 15:14

But then, in the next verse, Jesus says…

Henceforth I call you not servants;
for the servant knoweth not what his lord doeth:
but I have called you friends.
John 15:15

How am I not a servant if I do whatever the Lord tells me to do?

Then again, how can I be the Lord’s friend if I don’t do what He says?

Servant or friend, I don’t deserve any kind of good relationship with the Almighty.

(These were the last and first verses in what I read this morning: Daily Light on the Daily Path.)

Stand amazed at this kind of love!

The Father loves the Son.

How much!

The Father loves me.

How much?

“Thou…hast loved them,
as thou hast loved me”

John 17:23

Wow!

That really does blow me away.

As He loves the Son, so the Father loves me!
