Message to Law Enforcement

Thank you!

When I saw these five officers in this picture:

I thought of these four on the other side of the country:

So, to the living: Thanks again!

And to the families and friends and colleagues of those killed in action in Oakland (and elsewhere): A special thanks to you as well. May you find God’s comfort, peace, and courage.

A Hinge of History

Israel’s former (and now, newest) prime minister said that in reference to Iran.

“A hinge of history” — that’s got a poetic gong to it.

I don’t know what kind of knell this has, though: “the entire world should start worrying.”

Netanyahu said that as well. In reference to Iran also.

Netanyahu: US must end Iran nuke drive, or Israel may attack

The primary imperative for the United States and President Barack Obama is to put an end to Iran’s nuclear race, Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu said before his swearing-in Tuesday, adding that if the US failed to do so Israel might be forced to resort to a military strike on the Islamic Republic’s nuclear installations.

[…]

The Iranian drive for a nuclear weapon was a “hinge of history,” he said, emphasizing that all of “Western civilization” was responsible for preventing an Iranian bomb.

“You don’t want a messianic apocalyptic cult controlling atomic bombs,” Netanyahu said of the Iranian regime. “When the wide-eyed believer gets hold of the reins of power and the weapons of mass death, then the entire world should start worrying, and that is what is happening in Iran.”

OK, so Israel has made these threats before.

But a new day may be dawning in this mess as Netanyahu takes power. Let’s hope it isn’t a new day brought forth by flashing man-made light brighter than our sun.

I suppose those who see a neocon behind every bush have much more to worry about now. And maybe neo-conservatives should be feared as well as imagined. I don’t pretend to know. I inform; you decide. 🙂

Welcome to Oregon…

…and watch out for Grandma!!

Occasionally, traffic cops in Oregon nab drivers speeding over 100 miles per hour. When they do, the scofflaws tend to be young men.

At 4:45 p.m. Sunday, a Marion County sheriff’s deputy spotted a 53-year-old woman speeding east in a sporty 2003 Mazda 6 on Hylo Road Southeast, a hilly, two-lane road in Salem.

I was in the process of shutting down computers so I could go to bed when I saw the above story. You’ve just got to read the rest of the story.

I simply don’t know which best expresses my sentiment: 😆 🙄 😯

Heart Warmers

Toddler caught after falling 3 stories

Two men were being hailed as heroes by police on Monday for catching a toddler who fell 40 feet from a home's third-story window.

Robert Lemire told the North-Andover Mass. Eagle-Tribune newspaper that he was talking on his cell phone Sunday evening outside a pizza shop in Lawrence, about 25 miles north of Boston, when he saw the toddler dangling from a window across the street.

Inmates baby-sit tot found alone on highway

A prison work crew kept a toddler safe after the child was found wandering alone on a rural highway, Maryland authorities said.

The six minimum-security inmates shared their lunches with the boy and played with him, while authorities spent hours trying to locate the 2-year-old’s relatives, a correction officer said.

Thank you, Lord, for good news!

Coming on April Fool’s Day

Vexing computer worm to evolve on April Fool’s Day

A tenacious computer worm which has wriggled its way onto machines worldwide is set to evolve on April Fool’s Day, becoming harder to exterminate but not expected to wreak havoc.

[…]

“There is no evidence of it going into attack mode or dropping any particular payload on April 1st,” Ferguson said in an interview.

[…]

It can infect machines from the Internet or by hiding on USB memory sticks carrying data from one computer to another. Once in a computer it digs deep, setting up defenses that make it hard to extract.

A troubling aspect of Conficker is that it harnesses computing power of a botnet to crack passwords.

Microsoft has modified its free Malicious Software Removal Tool to detect and get rid of Conficker.

[…]

Computer users are advised to stay current on anti-virus tools and Windows updates, and to protect computers and files with strong passwords.

Conficker is programmed to reach out to 250 websites daily to download commands from its masters.

On Wednesday, the worm will begin connecting with 50,000 websites daily to better hide where orders originate….

[…]

Among the ways one can tell if their machine is infected is that the worm will block efforts to connect with websites of security firms such as Trend Micro or Symantec where there are online tools for removing the virus.

[…]

Hackers have taken advantage of Conficker hype by using promises of information or cures to lure Internet users to websites booby trapped with malicious software, according to security specialists.

Taking a Break

So on Monday we went over to Madras (Oregon, not India) to see our Mullet children. Well, Tuesday morning I took a break from computer work to go outside and do some brisk walking.

Eventually I took a break from my walking and took a picture of son-in-law Luke’s neat old-fashioned insulation:
